SPR (surface plasmon resonance) – for Vitamin Analysis

Tuesday 30 November 1999

Eclipse Scientific Group is now using a novel analytical technique, SPR (surface plasmon resonance), for vitamin analysis.

Months of comprehensive method development in conjunction with Biacore (the instrument manufacturers) and method validation were followed by a successful assessment by UKAS.

Eclipse now offers a UKAS accredited routine testing service for a wide range of fortified products, such as foods, feeds, beverages and vitamin supplements, containing the following vitamins:

  • Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin)
  • Vitamin B9 (folic acid) (AOAC certified method)
  • Biotin (Vitamin H)

The new Biacore methods will largely replace the less robust traditional MBA (microbiological assay) methods.

We have also developed and validated HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) procedures, which are also UKAS accredited and will replace the current MBA procedures for the analysis of:

  • Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)
  • Vitamin B3 (niacin, niacinamide)

These new procedures provide clients with more accurate results in a shorter time than by the traditional MBA methods:

  • Reliable (typically less than 10% CV)
  • Accurate (typical recoveries 90 – 110%)
  • Speed (results available in days)
