Microbiologists in Ashford have scooped the commercial laboratory of the year prize in the prestigious Oxoid international food awards.
The team at Eclipse Scientific Group (ESG), Foster Road, Sevington, beat off fierce competition from other scientists to seize the winner's trophy.
A small team of six analysts at the site operate three microbiology laboratories simultaneously for food, water and legionella tests.
Every day around 400 samples pass through the laboratories, with an average of three to four tests per sample.
Typical samples include pies, convenience foods, dairy produce, vegetables, raw meats, breads and confectionary. Mike Wigglesworth, General Manager, said:
"We are thrilled to win this award, which is deserving recognition for all the staff. The success of this laboratory is down to them. The team has a 'can do' attitude and are a shining example of what hard work, good self organisation and motivation can achieve."
Last year when the laboratory relocated from Canterbury to Ashford the entire team gave up their weekend to help. It meant the same throughput of samples was maintained and customers experienced no disruption. In fact during the last two years the laboratory's throughput has doubled.
Of all the microbiology laboratories in ESG the Ashford team continue to be the most productive and lend expertise and manpower to other parts of the business. "We have demonstrated that through thick and thin we get on and achieve results and we do it with a smile on our face," said Mike.
The Oxoid trophy recognises the efforts of scientists working in the food industry, efforts which often go unrecognised.
