Chemical Analysis of Water Samples

Eclipse Scientific Group works with UKAS accredited laboratories specialising in the chemical analysis of waters, wastes and associated materials.

(see Glossary of Acronyms)

Full range of Drinking Water Analysis

Waste water analysis for BOD, COD, suspended solids and other routine tests.

Full range of metals in waters, wastes and soils using ICPMS.
Wide range of organics including drinking water pesticides, chlorinated solvents, THMs and PAHs. Other organics including hydrocarbons and BTEX.
Volatile Organics Compounds (VOCs) by Headspace and Purge and Trap analysis including the EPA524 suite of compounds.
GCMS qualitative and quantitative analysis for the analysis of unknown compounds. Combined with the Purge and Trap for the analysis of unknown taints and odours.
Sample types analysed include bottled waters, swimming pools, private supplies, trade effluents, leachates and other waste waters.
Suitable sample containers can be supplied and collection can be arranged.

Glossary of Acronyms

BOD Biochemical oxygen demand: is a measure of the amount of oxygen that bacteria will consume while decomposing organic matter under aerobic conditions.
COD Chemical oxygen demand: is a measure of the total quantity of oxygen required to oxidize all organic material into carbon dioxide and water.
BTEX Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes - naturally occurring components of petroleum that end up in traces amounts in engine fuel
ICPMS Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry. A multi-element analysis method, where a plasma source dissociates the sample into ions - these are then detected in a mass spectrometer
THMs Trihalomethanes, chemical compounds liable to be formed when water is disinfected with chlorine.
PAHs Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons - formed during incomplete burning of organic substances, including tobacco, coal, oil, wood, tar, barbequed meat
GCMS Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, an analysis technique where volatile compounds are separated on a chromatographic column and then detected by mass spectroscopy
VOCs Volatile Organic Compounds - organic (carbon containing) chemicals that are implicated in causing long term damage to the environment.
MTBE methyl tertiary butyl ether - is made from methanol and a by-product of the oil refining process, it is added to petroleum spirit to enhance the efficiency of the combustion process.
